Wydad beat Al Ahly to become CAF Champions League winners

Image
Wydad Casablanca has a new hero in Zouheir El Moutaraji, whose brace gave them a third African Champions League title in the final against Al-Ahly Cairo (2-0), in a crazy atmosphere at home on Monday. A sumptuous shot (15th), a goal of hunter in two times (48th), the N.7 of the Reds of Casa made twice explode the Mohamed V stadium, for the third C1 of WAC. The National of Cairo, king of Africa with 10 C1 won, had to bow to the inspirations of the Moroccan striker. Zouheir El Moutaraji opened the scoring with a fantastic shot from 30 meters, which went into the top corner of Mohamed El-Shenawy's net (15th). Then on a counter, in two steps, his first shot being pushed back by the Egyptian goalkeeper, the N.7 of WAC devoured Mohamed Hany, the Egyptian defender, and doubled the stake just after the break, literally setting fire to the Mohamed V stadium of Casablanca, where the final was played, the Egyptians having challenged in vain before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) th...

Salah wins 2022 PFA Players' Player of the Year awards

Image
Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was voted men’s player of the year by his fellow professionals in England for the second time on Thursday. Salah became only the seventh man to win the Professional Footballers’ Association award more than once after a season in which he scored 23 goals in the Premier League - tied for first with Tottenham’s Son Heung-min - and had a league-leading 14 assists. Kevin De Bruyne, the star player for Premier League champion Manchester City, was looking to win the award for the third straight year. De Bruyne was also on the six-man shortlist, along with Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Liverpool pair Virgil van Dijk and Sadio ManĂ©. Despite having his best scoring season in the league, Son didn’t make the PFA’s team of the year, which contained six players from Liverpool. The Egyptian international also achieved League Cup and FA Cup success with Liverpool but lost Champions League and Africa Cup of Nations titles. PFA members ...

Algeria: Former football star, Rabah Madjer faces 18-month jail term

Image
A prosecutor in Algiers on Thursday demanded 18 months in prison for former Algerian national team coach and FC Porto star Rabah Madjer, notably for "fraud". According to the local press, the former football star is being prosecuted for "forgery and use of forgeries", "false declaration" and "swindling". Rabah Madjer, 63, owned two newspapers "Al Balagh" and "Al Balagh Erriadhi" and allegedly continued to cash publicity cheques a year after their closure. The plaintiff, the National Publishing and Advertising Agency (ANEP), has asked for the sum to be returned and for damages to be paid. The verdict will be delivered on 9 June. Rabah Madjer is known for a back-heel kick he made during the 1987 Champions Cup with FC Porto against Bayern Munich. The back-heel now bears the name Madjer. He was the Fennecs' coach for eight months before being sacked at the end of June 2018 after a series of poor results.

Rashford has pedigree against top nations Image: Rashford hit the post with his penalty against Italy His last kick of a ball for England was a missed penalty in the Euro 2020 final against Italy, who England host at Molineux this Saturday in the Nations League. Rashford was recovering from shoulder surgery when he missed the first two international breaks of last season - missing the World Cup qualifiers against Hungary, Andorra and Poland. He subsequently withdrew from Southgate's England squad for the games against Albania and San Marino in November, with the forward using the two-week Premier League break to focus on regaining his fitness after a bout of illness and a long injury lay-off.

Marcus Rashford: England's forgotten man conspicuous by his absence ahead of Italy reunion in Nations League

Image
Marcus Rashford's last touch in an England shirt was his penalty miss in the Euro 2020 final against Italy; Manchester United forward has been omitted from Gareth Southgate's last two squads and faces a pivotal period ahead of the World Cup "I think it is important, perhaps after this camp, for me to go and sit with him and find out a bit more about what is going on. We know he is desperate to do well." Gareth Southgate was acutely aware that Marcus Rashford's omission from England's squad for March's international friendlies with Switzerland and Ivory Coast at Wembley was going to attract scrutiny. The forward had been searching for a break in a struggling Manchester United team, but the form of those in his position had made the England manager's decision to leave him out of his 25-man squad a relatively straightforward one. The numbers didn't stack up favourably. Raheem Sterling ended the campaign with 19 goals from 54 games. Bukayo Saka scored ...

Abraham at top of his game

Tammy Abraham is a really interesting one. I think he's got a really strong chance of starting this match, which sounds extraordinary when you think Harry Kane has just reached 50 goals in an England shirt. I think he's got a really strong chance of starting this match, which sounds extraordinary when you think Harry Kane has just reached 50 goals in an England shirt. Kane has played both matches in this Nations League campaign so far though - against Hungary and Germany - while Abraham has not had any minutes yet. He's in cracking form, too. Seventeen goals for Roma in Serie A and 29 in all competitions, the highest-scoring Englishman in Italy since Gerry Hitchens in 1962. That's the form he...
